Question: Greatest of 5 numbers

Comment on Greatest of 5 numbers

Using the sum of n numbers formula has brought set and statistics to LIFE for me! I looked forward to studying math this morning. I get this question right too :)

Good stuff -keep at it!

Do the sets always have to be in ascending order? Because initially I used the set (4,4,5,4,X) to solve it and get 23.

To find the median, we must list the values in ascending order so that we can identify the middlemost value.

If we take your solution {4, 4, 5, 4, 23} and rearrange the values in ascending order, we get {4, 4, 4, 5, 23}. So, the median of this set equals 4, not 5 (which is stated in the given information).

Hi Brent. I have a question. Is possible that the last number was 22. Can I have 4,4,5,5,22. But then I think , is difficult to know which number is the mode, can be 4 or 5.
Thanks

The set {4,4,5,5,22} has TWO modes: 4 and 5
So, this set would not satisfy the given information.

Thanks.I get it now.
Let me ask another related question. What happened if we have one set of numbers with two modes?.How works the mode selection there.
Thanks.

I'm not sure if I fully understand your question.
Here are some examples of sets with two modes:
{3, 3, 7, 7, 10, 15}: the modes are 3 and 7
{11, 20}: the modes are 11 and 20
{4, 4, 4, 7, 7, 7}: the modes are 4 and 7
{4, 4, 4, 7, 7, 7, 8, 9, 10}: the modes are 4 and 7
