Question: Evaluate a Fraction

Comment on Evaluate a Fraction

Hello can I cross things out, for example I know .375 goes into .75 twice and 1.111 is twice .5555. Is this a wrong way to approach this problem? thank you for your time and assistance!!

That's a perfectly valid approach.

Wouldn't be faster to use a calculator in this question? I did, and I got the right answer.

A calculator will definitely work here. Just keep in mind that the GRE's onscreen calculator is pretty clunky, and its functionality may be different from the calculator that you typically use.

If you're going to rely on the onscreen calculator, be sure to familiarize yourself with it before test day.

Here's our video explaining how it works: https://www.greenlighttestprep.com/module/general-gre-info-and-strategie...

If you cross simplify 1/6 x 3/4 , shouldn't it equal to 1/2? why 1/8?

When cross-simplifying, we simplify the numerator of one fraction with the denominator of the other fraction (more here: https://www.greenlighttestprep.com/module/gre-arithmetic/video/1069)

So, in 1/6 x 3/4, we can take 6 and 3, and divide both values by 3 to get: 1/2 x 1/4

Multiply to get 1/8

What if I don't remember the fraction to decimal table? Is there another way?

You can also calculate the decimal equivalent by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

For example, 8/25 = 8 ÷ 25 = 0.32

To perform the calculation, you can either use long division or use the GRE's onscreen calculator.
