No, that approach is not valid. It just happened to be that the numbers happened to work in your favor.

Notice that your solution does not utilize the information from the circle graph. This information is important, since it indirectly tells you the PRESENT number of gulls.

For example, IF the circle graph told us that, PRESENTLY, 100% of the birds are gulls, THEN adding 18,000 more gulls, would mean that the NEW bird population would still consist entirely of gulls.

Your calculation (0.01* X * 30000 = 18000) essentially says that x percent of the PRESENT bird population = the number of gulls to be added to the island. This is not in line with the given information.

I didn't pay attention to the word "ADDED". I thought the number of gulls after the addition of gulls was 18000.
