Lesson: Common Prefixes

Comment on Common Prefixes

Hi Brent,

Some of text completion lesson video was overlap with the Sentence equivalence?

There are many similarities between Text Completion questions and Sentence Equivalence questions.
The main difference is that, for Text Completion questions, we're looking for only ONE word for each blank.
Conversely, for Sentence Equivalence questions, we're looking for TWO words for each blank.

Cheers,
Brent

If I already completed Sentence equivalence lessons, can I skip some of text completion since there might be the same in some videos?

There are zero practice questions that appear in both of those modules. So, don't skip any.

Hi Brent,

the suffix "-rogate" what does it mean? and how knowing this info can help with words like: derogation, abrogation, subrogation, supererogation.

Great question.
I did some research and there doesn't seem to be much to explain all words formed with ROGATE.
The best I could find is this: ROGATE - Root - Meaning “to ask” or “to question”
This explains INTERROGATE, but not other words.

Cheers,
Brent

Brent, thank you for taking the time. I also did some research and found this for abrogate:
"The Latin root of this word is made up of the prefix ab- "away" and rogare "to propose a law." What does it mean if you propose a law away? You repeal it, of course, so abrogate means to officially revoke, cancel or abolish."

I applied this to derogate, de=off; propose a law off, to belittle it, as of putting it off.

Nice investigative work!!

"Students recently signed a petition urging colleges to _________ the GRE requirement for admissions during the COVID-19 crisis."

Abrogate!
