Question: Palatial Home

Comment on Palatial Home

Why not gaudy?? It means tasteless

Good question, Tushar!

I think GAUDY is a good answer; however, I don't thinks it's as good as DOWDY.

DOWDY connotes plain, simple, unfashionable (and even inexpensive), which is in stark contrast to what one might find in a palatial home that's furnished with a fortune.

GAUDY, on the other hand, connotes a sense of tastelessness, but this is not necessarily associated with a lack of money. A rich person can have home that is both GAUDY and palatial.

Does that help?

Cheers,
Brent

I agree with you about this. By the way, I would label this question under HARD difficulty since "dowdy" is an exceptionally low yield GRE vocabulary word. You won't find this word on the actual exam, believe me.

It's hard to predict how many people know the definition of each word (like DOWDY). I'd say it's either a medium or hard word.
