This is easily a 165+ level question!
SPORADIC is an appealing word, but it doesn't work with with the part of the sentence that basically says "the presence of informal expressions and slang is now GENERALLY ACCEPTED." The old guard, however, laments this GENERAL ACCEPTANCE of slang.
If we choose SPORADIC for the third blank, we're saying that the old guard doesn't like the FREQUENCY of slang, which sounds right, but doesn't work directly with GENERAL ACCEPTANCE. On the other hand, if we choose CONSPICUOUS, we're saying that the old guard doesn't like the fact that slang is now GENERALLY ACCEPTED.
Does that help?
